Micro Digital Announces smx® vs. FreeRTOS™ Comparison

Costa Mesa, California, March 18, 2014 —Micro Digital has completed a detailed comparison of smx, a commercial RTOS kernel, to a typical free generic kernel called FreeRTOS. It is posted at www.smxrtos.com/articles/comp/smx_vs_freertos.htm. Unfortunately, many people in the embedded community believe that RTOS kernels are all equivalent. This comparison disproves that notion by showing that smx offers many more and better features than a typical generic kernel. What is not in the kernel must be developed in the application. For example, if the kernel lacks a needed feature, time will be spent creating and debugging that feature. If the kernel provides inadequate diagnostics, time will be wasted in debugging.

This comparison is not marketing hyperbole; it is a careful technical analysis, feature by feature, by a kernel expert. As such, it provides valuable insight concerning what features should be in a kernel, and why.

Those decision makers who come down on the wrong side of the buy/reinvent decision are committing their teams to develop code that has already been written, debugged, and proven in many other applications, instead of focusing on code that will give their companies market advantages. Such poor decisions are based upon unrealistic expectations of what their teams can accomplish in limited times. The result is excessive overtime at the ends of projects by programmers struggling to meet delivery dates, and missed company revenues and profits. Either of these is typically many times the cost of a good commercial kernel. Hence, the defense of free is very thin, indeed.
