FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Low-Cost FAT File System

Costa Mesa, California, February 22, 2006 — Micro Digital Inc. announces the immediate availability of a DOS-compatible file system for developers of embedded systems. The product, smxFS(tm), is another addition to Micro Digital’s extensive line of embedded software products. smxFS is configured for optimal use with Micro Digital’s SMX® RTOS (real time operating system), but can easily be ported to other RTOSs, or used stand-alone. It supports ARM, ColdFire, PowerPC, x86, and other leading processors.

smxFS offers a clean, modular design that enables embedded developers to easily add file I/O to their projects. It is aimed at low-end projects with tight memory constraints. It supports removable media such as USB thumb drives and Compact Flash and non-removable media such as resident NOR and NAND flash. Removable media are DOS/Windows compatible so that they may be exchanged with Windows and other compatible RTOSs

smxFS is a FAT file system for hard real-time embedded systems. It requires minimal ROM and RAM, thus allowing it to be used in very small embedded systems, as well as in larger ones. smxFS supports FAT12/16/32 and VFAT (long file names compatible with Win32 operating systems). It uses the standard C library file API (i.e. fopen(), fread(), etc.) that is familiar to most C programmers. These functions are reentrant so that smxFS is safe for multitasking.

Available drivers include: USB mass storage (e.g. thumb drives), CompactFlash, SD/MMC, DiskOnChip®, ATA/IDE hard drive, RAM disk, NAND flash disk, and NOR flash disk. Typical code footprint is 30 KB plus drivers and typical RAM size is 7 KB. Typical data transfer rates are 1 MB/sec read and 150 KB/sec write for SD.

Availability and Licensing
smxFS is available now. It is royalty-free for one end-user-developed product. It comes with full source code, including all device emulators, and there are no per-seat charges. The price is $4000, including RAM disk driver. Other drivers are priced $1000 to $5000.
